长假的前两天已经有超过5000万个游客 Labor Day runs from May 1 to 5 this year, and domestic tourists are returning to destinations across the country.
Welcome to our first issue! In today’s newsletter, we’ll read an article adapted from the Beijing Daily Group about China’s Labor Day holiday.
Because Labor Day in China falls on May 1 every year, the holiday is known as “五一”. This year, it’s an extended long weekend, from May 1 to 5, and this is the first major holiday in China since the coronavirus outbreak began.
As life starts returning to normal in China, how are people spending their holiday? Read on to find out.
今年中国的“五一”假期是疫情【1】后的第一次长假【2】。假期的前两天，中国各地已经有超过5000万个游客【3】，旅游收入【4】超过226亿【5】元。
【1】疫情 yì qíng = epidemic
【2】长假 cháng jià= 长的假期，long holiday
【3】游客 yóu kè = tourist
【4】收入 shōu rù = income
【5】亿 yì = 100 million
在陕西【6】的某个古镇【7】，今年的“五一”假期有网红【8】通过手机直播【9】卖东西，还有特别表演，让游客体验【10】当地的历史和文化。
【6】陕西 shǎn xī = Shaanxi (province in China)
【7】某个古镇 mǒu gè gǔ zhèn = some (unspecified) old town.
某个 = some unspecified object
Example: 某个国家 = some unspecified country
古镇 = old town
【8】网红 wǎng hóng = literally “online red”; i.e. online celebrity/social media influencer
【9】直播 zhí bō = live-streaming
【10】体验 tǐ yàn = to experience
为了安全，古镇限制【11】了游客的人数，避免【12】太多人。游客进入前也一定要 量体温【13】。
【11】限制 xiàn zhì = limit
【12】避免 bì miǎn = avoid
【13】量体温 cè liáng tǐ wēn = measure body temperature
量 = to measure
体温 = 身体的温度 = body temperature
在江西【14】，山上开满了红花，吸引不少游客来爬山、赏花【15】。游客们沉醉【16】在春天的花海【17】里。
【14】江西 jiāng xī = Jiangxi (province in China)
【15】赏花 shǎng huā = admire the flowers
【16】沉醉 chén zuì = literally “sink and get drunk in”. This is used as a positive term! In this case, it means that the tourists are intoxicated with the beauty of the flowers.
【17】花海 huā hǎi = 花的海 = sea of flowers
在天津【18】的夜市【19】，医生和护士都可以免费吃小吃【20】，其他游客买东西时也会有五折【21】的优惠【22】。现场非常热闹，到处都有人排队。
【18】天津 tiān jīn = Tianjin (city in China)
【19】夜市 yè shì = night market
【20】小吃 xiǎo chī = snacks/street food
【21】五折 wǔ zhé = 50% off. In Chinese, the discount is “reversed” — e.g. 八折 means 20% off, whereas 二折 means 80% off!
【22】优惠 yōu huì = discount
看来，疫情后的国内旅游市场，正在慢慢回温【23】。
【23】回温 huí wēn = literally “return to warmth”. In this context, it means that the domestic travel market is slowly recovering.
