#10: 为什么北京便利店里的垃圾桶突然不见了? The Case of the Missing Trash Cans in Beijing's Convenience Stores

《新京报》的记者去了北京十多家便利店,发现很多店里都找不到垃圾桶。A reporter for a Beijing daily tries to find out why trash cans are disappearing from convenience stores.

最近,北京很多便利店里都看不到垃圾桶了。

便利店 biàn lì diàn = convenience store
垃圾桶 lā jī tǒng = trash can/rubbish bin

来到一间7-11便利店,找不到垃圾桶。店员说:“这不让放垃圾桶,您可以到旁边小公园的垃圾桶里。”

在一家“好邻居”便利店,垃圾桶也不见了。店员告诉记者,店里垃圾桶都放在收银台后面,“顾客的垃圾我都收了然后放在垃圾桶内。”

记者在另一家7-11里终于看到了垃圾桶,却发现盖子胶带封死

盖子 gài zi = cover/lid
胶带 jiāo dài = tape
封死 fēng sǐ = literally “sealed dead”, i.e. sealed shut


原来,北京今年5月1日开始规定大家需要做好垃圾分类,把垃圾分成四类:厨余垃圾可回收物有害垃圾和其它垃圾。如果顾客随意扔垃圾,遇到检查时便利店会被罚款,所以店员决定把垃圾桶收起来。

规定 guī dìng = to regulate
分类 fēn lèi = to sort (in this case, sorting trash)
厨余垃圾 chú yú lā jī = kitchen waste
可回收物 kě huí shōu wù = recyclables
有害垃圾 yǒu hài lā jī = hazardous waste
随意 suí yì = arbitrarily/randomly
检查 jiǎn chá = inspection/check
罚款 fá kuǎn = fine


其实,有些便利店放了这四个分类垃圾桶,却遇到了一些困难。

比如,顾客没做好分类,随意扔垃圾,店员在收垃圾的时候需要再分类一次。

另外,也有店员说,垃圾分类后,他要到店外丢时,却发现附近只有一个垃圾桶。“只能把分好的垃圾又放在一个垃圾桶中,这就失去了分类的意义。”
