如果你来到北下朱，你会发现这不是一个普通的村落。
北下朱 běi xià zhū = name of village in Zhejiang province
村落 cūn luò = village
村里的每家店外，都有写着“直播”或“爆款”的招牌。
直播 zhí bō = live-streaming
爆款 bào kuǎn = trendy/hot products
招牌 zhāo pái = signboard
走进任何一家店，你会看到一排排坐在手机支架前的年轻人。
他们手里拿着各种商品， 如衣服、化妆品、日用品等，对镜头大喊：
支架 zhī jià = tripod
商品 shāng pǐn = products
化妆品 huà zhuāng pǐn = cosmetics
日用品 rì yòng pǐn = daily necessities
镜头 jìng tóu = camera lens
“今晚买一送一！”
“不买就没了！”
这些人都是主播，他们正通过直播把商品卖给观众。
而他们所在的北下朱被称为“中国网红直播第一村”。
主播 zhǔ bō = host (in this case, host of live-streaming shows)
网红 wǎng hóng = online celebrity
村里有13000人做社交电商行业，年交易规模 (annual transaction volume) 近百亿元(US$1.4B)。
社交电商 shè jiāo diàn shāng = social e-commerce
北下朱吸引了全国各地的创业者。
他们希望通过直播带货变富。
创业者 chuàng yè zhě = entrepreneur
直播带货 zhí bō dài huò = to sell a product on a live-streaming show
“这是一个空气中都充满金钱味道的地方。”一名创业者说道。
连街上的垃圾桶上都写着：“走进北下朱，实现财富梦”。
实现 shí xiàn = realize
财富 cái fù = wealth
一个星期赚十多万
31岁的郑留平来自安徽 (Anhui province)。
他是北下朱最早做直播的人之一。
他卖的是会发光的玩具。
发光 fā guāng = to glow
玩具 wán jù = toy
他说，最高纪录是一场直播有好几万人观看。
最多的一次卖掉了几百单，一个星期赚了十多万 (>US$14,000)。
村里有很多像郑留平一样的人。
他们只需要一个小空间、一台手机，就可以直播带货了。
纪录 jì lù = record

“粉丝们喜欢听你有多惨，也喜欢听成功学。”
29岁的“星迪先生”是湖北 (Hubei province) 人。
他有28万粉丝，每天直播五六个小时。
“星迪先生”喜欢在直播里说他的创业故事。
他说，自己是富二代。
粉丝 fěn sī = fans
富二代 fù èr dài = literally “rich second generation”, i.e. people with rich parents
但是，为了追求自己的创业梦，他带着1000元 (US$140) 离家出走，一个人来到北下朱。
“粉丝们喜欢听你有多惨，也喜欢听成功学。” “星迪先生”说。
追求 zhuī qiú = to pursue
惨 cǎn = awful or miserable
成功学 = success stories
“你是拿抖音来玩的，别人是用来赚钱的。”
越来越多人来到北下朱追求他们的网红梦，这里也开始出现了教他们怎么成功带货的“学院”。
刘罡是一所这类学院的“校长”。
他说，学院成立不到两个月，已经办了11期“训练班”。

“你是拿抖音来玩的，别人是用来赚钱的。”
“传统的老师不可能教怎么涨粉、卖货……像我们这样的学校，别的城市也很难看得到。”

涨粉 zhǎng fěn = to grow one’s fan base
7天课程的学费是1980元 (US$280)。
来上课的学员包括：带着两个小孩来创业的妈妈、想要学习直播带货的农民等等。
据说，有学员曾经上了“热门”，一天赚了十几万 (>US$14,000)。

火热背后的问题
这几年，随着大量“网红”来到北下朱，当地的房租也不停上涨。
房租 fáng zū = rent
上涨 shàng zhǎng = to increase at a rapid pace
村主任表示，“今天又有几个外地商人，追在我后面要房子。”
村主任 cūn zhǔ rèn = village chief
“我说，真的没有房子。”
有人为了租到地方，愿意给出很高的租金。
“房租从原来的一年1万多 (>US$1400)，被抬到了如今的10多万 (US$14,000)，几乎是周边村的两倍。”
当地一名专家说，“房租每年都在离谱地上涨，商户们第一年经销赚来的钱，原本打算明年创建自己的品牌，结果全被房东拿走了。”

有专家指出，北下朱的网红虽多，但他们卖的东西都是大同小异。
大家一看到有什么流行，就会跑去卖。
大同小异 dà tóng xiǎo yì = mostly similar, with very minor differences
流行 liú xíng = to be popular
没人真正去建立起自己的品牌。
不断跟风，能持续多久？
“就像一阵风起、一阵风落，说没就没了。”
跟风 gēn fēng = to follow the trend
